MICU Day-float Service Rules

Day-float Responsibilities:

  1. Staffing:
    1. The EM program will provide at least 1 MICU day-float resident.
    2. When there are 2 EM day-floats, at least one day-float must be present every day of the week.
  2. Schedule:
    1. Mon-Fri:
      1. Day-floats will arrive by 7 AM for rounds, supervise the post-call interns and assist any other teams.
      2. The day-floats leaves when the post-call intern signs out and after completion of afternoon rounds with the on-call resident, MICU fellow and MICU attendings.
    2. Weekends:
        1.  The day-float will supervise the post-call interns in the MICU.
        2. The day-float may only leave when the post-call intern signs out and the MICU fellow has been updated.
    3. Holidays:
      1. Weekday holidays – these days will be treated as “weekend days” and the above rules will apply.
      2. Weekend holidays: No change from usual weekend schedule.
    4. Days Off:
      1. Days off will be determined in advance and located in the Internal Medicine’s Amion schedule
        1. When only 1 EM MICU day-float is scheduled: two days off per week and will include only Tuesday and Thursday.  
        2. When 2 EM MICU day-floats are scheduled: each day-float gets two days off per week (weekend or weekday) but at least one day-float must be present every day of the week. Days off will be scheduled by the Internal Medicine Chief Residents in advance. 
  3. Responsibilities:
    1. Primary responsibility – Supervising post-call interns:
      1. Serve as the supervising resident to the post-call interns performing procedures when the MICU fellow or MICU attending is not present
      2. Running the list with post-call interns, ensuring daily tasks are being performed efficiently.
      3. assist with road-trips
      4. ensure the post-call interns leave the hospital in a timely fashion (goal of 5pm)
      5. participate in afternoon rounds with the MICU attendings, fellow and on-call resident
    2. Secondary responsibilities – assisting the other MICU teams
      1. assist the on-call team in the event of multiple synchronous admissions or other MICU teams with abnormally high censuses that have a resident or intern scheduled for a day off
      2. serve as the supervising resident to interns performing procedures when the MICU fellow or MICU attending is not present
      3. ensure the interns leave the hospital in a timely fashion (goal of 5 pm for non-call interns, 8 pm for on-call interns)
  4. Education
    1. 9 AM – Pulmonary/Critical Care Morning Report (10th Floor CCD)
    2. 11:30 AM – IM Morning Report (A700)
    3. 12:30 PM – IM Noon Teaching Conference (A700)
    4. 2:00 PM – MICU Lectures (10th Floor CCD)
  5. Feedback
    1. It is expected that a week into their Day-float rotation that the ER day-float receive feedback from the pulmonology fellow and at the end of their rotation.
