UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO NEPHROLOGY SUBSPECIALTY ROTATION CURRICULUM
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The goal for each resident is to demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of the common renal disorders.
- Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
- Understand the common etiologies for AKI
- Understand appropriate indications for renal replacement therapy (RRT)
- Understand the differences between the various RRT modalities
- Differentiate between acute glomerular, tubulointerstitial, and obstructive causes of AKI
- Urine microscopy
- Appropriate diagnostic imaging
- Understand the indication for percutaneous renal biopsy
- Fluid and Electrolyte Disorders
- Demonstrate proficiency in evaluation and treatment of sodium disorders (Hypo/hypernatremia)
- Demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation and management of potassium (hyper/hypokalemia) and magnesium (hypomagnesaemia) disorders
- Acid/Base Disorders
- Demonstrate proficiency in evaluation and management of simple and mixed acid /base disorders
- Understand physiologic compensation mechanisms of various acid/base disorders
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- Gain confidence in the evaluation and management of a patient with stable CKD, including appropriate management of secondary disorders
- Anemia in CKD
- Hypertension and volume overload in CKD
- Secondary hyperparathyroidism
- Acid/base balance
- Learn appropriate timing for referral to nephrology and transplantation
- Gain confidence in the evaluation and management of a patient with stable CKD, including appropriate management of secondary disorders
- Hypertension
- Demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation and treatment of systemic hypertension
- Recognize patients requiring evaluation for secondary causes of hypertension
