UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO NEPHROLOGY SUBSPECIALTY ROTATION CURRICULUM

 

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:  The goal for each resident is to demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of the common renal disorders.

 

  1. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
    1. Understand the common etiologies for AKI
    2. Understand appropriate indications for renal replacement therapy (RRT)
    3. Understand the differences between the various RRT modalities
    4. Differentiate between acute glomerular, tubulointerstitial, and obstructive causes of AKI
      1. Urine microscopy
      2. Appropriate diagnostic imaging
    5. Understand the indication for percutaneous renal biopsy

 

  1. Fluid and Electrolyte Disorders
    1. Demonstrate proficiency in evaluation and treatment of sodium disorders (Hypo/hypernatremia)
    2. Demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation and management of potassium (hyper/hypokalemia) and magnesium (hypomagnesaemia) disorders

 

  1. Acid/Base Disorders
    1. Demonstrate proficiency in evaluation and management of simple and mixed acid /base disorders
    2. Understand physiologic compensation mechanisms of various acid/base disorders

 

  1. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
    1. Gain confidence in the evaluation and management of a patient with stable CKD, including appropriate management of secondary disorders
      1. Anemia in CKD
      2. Hypertension and volume overload in CKD
      3. Secondary hyperparathyroidism
      4. Acid/base balance
    2. Learn appropriate timing for referral to nephrology and transplantation

 

  1. Hypertension
    1. Demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation and treatment of systemic hypertension
    2. Recognize patients requiring evaluation for secondary causes of hypertension
