The Department of Medicine offers the following opportunities for residents and fellows outside of UCMC who would like to spend up to 1 month for an away rotation at our institution.  Please find additional information regarding the opportunities available listed below. The contact person for elective rotations and observerships varies depending on the specialty. Pease refer to the list below and contact the appropriate person should you have any additional questions.

Elective Rotations:

Elective rotations are available for trainees who are currently a resident or fellow in a US training program.  These rotations are usually available between February and June each academic year.  External rotators typically are able to rotate on one of our consult blocks during their requested timeframe.  If you have an interest not listed, such as research to be completed with a specific faculty mentor, please describe your plans when submitting your inquiry.

Please email amarkham@bsd.uchicago.edu with your elective rotation inquiry. When submitting an email inquiry please include your current position (level of training), current institution name and location, rotation dates being requested, the name of the requested rotation, and your CV. Please submit your inquiry 3-4 months prior to the start of your proposed rotation. If you are not currently licensed in the state of Illinois, you will need to apply for a temporary medical license. This process may take up to 4-6 months to complete and you should submit your application in advance to allow for this. Once we have received your inquiry and are able to pre-approve, you will be contacted to complete an elective rotation application.  All documents requested will need to be submitted at least 45 days prior to the start of your proposed rotation.

Visiting Observers (click for application process):

Visiting observer rotations are available for trainees who are currently a resident or fellow in a qualifying training program outside of the US.  Qualifying programs must be listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory.  Please review the requirements listed on the Global Health Initiative’s website above for additional requirements and information regarding the application process.

Visiting Student Electives:

Please email visiting.pritzker@bsd.uchicago.edu for information regarding requirements and the application process.  Visiting student electives are typically open to 4th year students who have completed all clerkships, and students must be from LCME-accredited schools.
