Core Policy Regarding Order Writing*

Overview

The purpose of this policy is to assure that Medicine Housestaff are kept aware of any and all management and therapeutic decisions regarding the patients which they are assigned.

Program Policy Regarding Order Writing

The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program in conjunction with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education require that a resident must write all orders for patients under his/her care, with appropriate supervision by the attending physician.  It is recognized that there are some circumstances when an attending physician or subspecialty fellow will write orders on a resident’s patient.  In the case that an attending or subspecialty fellow writes such orders, he/she must communicate his/her action to the resident in a timely manner.

*Note that core policies are those required by the ACGME.  Many core policies will also be found embedded in the text of the University of Chicago, Internal Medicine Residency handbook
