Update 12/2015

Interns

  • Interns on outpatient or consults services are expected to answer pages at a minimum from Monday through Friday 8AM to 5PM.
  • Interns on inpatient services sign over to the covering intern when they are not in house.
  • Interns on outpatient or consults services may sign over to the resident covering their respective Ambulatory Group pager from 8AM Saturday until 8AM on Monday.
  • Interns may sign over to the resident covering their respective Ambulatory Group (ATG) pager for the duration of their vacation.  Please note that interns switch rotations 2 days before residents, and therefore interns may need to discuss with 2 residents coverage of their pager over the duration of their vacation.

Residents

  • Residents on on outpatient or consults services are expected to answer pages at a minimum from Monday through Friday 8AM to 5PM.
  • Residents on inpatient services should have their pagers covered by the corresponding intern on service during their days off.  For services with two interns, there should be a discussion of who is covering.
  • Residents on outpatient or consults services may sign over to the resident covering their respective Ambulatory Group (ATG) pager from 8AM Saturday until 8AM Monday.
  • Residents on vacation may sign over to the resident covering their respective Ambulatory Group pager for the duration of their vacation.

Night float

  • During the day, night float interns should sign their pagers over to the on-call intern for the service. For example, the Cardiology NF intern signs his/her pager to the long call team’s intern. MICU night float interns may sign their pager to either day call intern.
  • Residents on night float may sign their pagers over to their ATG group during the day.

General Medicine

  • All post-call residents on the General Medicine service will sign over their pager to the day float when they leave the hospital.
  • The day float will then cover the senior resident’s pager until the day float leaves in the evening.
  • This policy will ensure that the residents are able to comply with ACGME duty hours post-call. It will also minimize the number of pages that are missed post-call in order to improve patient care.
  • Urgent clinic pages should be returned by the dayfloat while non-urgent clinic pages should be relayed to the primary resident or PCG trio via email or Epic inbasket.
